The ViewPlus IVEO System for Accessible Graphics
This hands-on workshop is intended to teach blind high school and university students how to access graphical information. Sighted participants will learn how to create accessible graphics and to enrich existing graphics to make them more accessible. Science and Math use a great deal of graphical information, so access to graphics is crucial to learning and doing math and science. This workshop will include scanning existing images and importing images from other electronic formats into IVEO Creator Pro to make them accessible. These transformations can be done by blind people. Creation of graphics will be demonstrated for sighted participants, some of which is also possible for blind people to do. Tactile copy can be created from either IVEO Creator Pro or from the free IVEO Viewer by printing to a ViewPlus embosser. These tactile graphics are read by placing that tactile copy on an IVEO touchpad, pressing on text or graphical objects to hear information spoken and displayed in braille if an on-line braille display is being used. Text on the graphics is automatically accessible, but graphical objects need to be labeled by human beings. Participants will learn how to label graphical objects with text or speech. Some graphics can be made accessible by blind people with no sighted assistance, but many images do require some sighted help to label graphics. The workshop will teach blind people how to train sighted helpers to add that additional information in a few minutes.
